Why do I oppose breed specific legislation?
Pit bulls are the breed most often targeted. Pit bulls are not a breed. They are a type. Various dogs look like pit bulls, so al sorts of dogs can be deemed dangerous, even if they are nice Lab mixes. The Pit bull classification is a nebulous term.
Some lines of Pit Bull are very aggressive, game bred animals. Most lines aren’t of this type. However, it’s very possible to buy a nice “American stafforshire terrier,” and maybe get a dog that bites someone. That does not mean that we need breed specific legislation.
Even if pit bulls are banned, there are dozens of other breeds that are bigger and even more likely to be aggressive than pit bulls or any of the other breeds usually mentioned in these laws. There are all sorts of fighting dogs from the developing world that could be imported as replacements for pit bulls.
Further, there are too many nice pit bulls around and too many nasty golden retreivers. Our idea about which dog is super-aggressive is really a matter of culture. Goldens might be a top biting breed now, but I’ve never heard of anyone wanting to ban them.
Finaly, if pit bulls or any other breed is banned, the owners will simply go underground. The dogs won’t get the vet care they need. In Ontario, where there is a total ban on bull and terrier breeds, the dogs still live there, but the law is haphazardly enforced. This means that there are lots of dogs living in the shadows. Do we really want dogs living in the shadows?
We do need laws to stop super-aggressive dogs. However, I’ve seen super aggression in Labs, and that breed is deemed the all-American family pet (even though it’s a Canadian-British breed.) We need laws that regulate bad dog behavior and irresponsible ownership.
Breed specific legislaton is a good thing for politicians to run on. Every pit bull attack is sensationalized, almost as badly as every missing white girl. But as a sound policy, it must be opposed. We have to think about the real unintended consequences of such a policy.
I have long since given up debating BSL,as I would not debate Legalising Rape and
Paediophilia.BSL is wrong in it’s entirety, end of story.I have a very good feeling about
your new president,he appears to be a Decent Human Being and already without
intervention from the President 3 towns decided not to proceed with BSL.
I understand when he was a Senator in Illinois he BANNED BSL throughout the state.
So I do beleive that many of these wannabee politicos that have tried to make themselves a name on the back of MURDERING household pets, will start treading
lightly and maybe even try to take on some real issues.
Also if push comes to shove an approach could be made to your new president, who does appear to be very approachable,Furher I do beleive that under this man
the USA will soon become a Democracy again.
Thank You. Finally someone smart, not like all these half bred ignorant close-minded jackasses I see blogging about how pits are monsters and how labs and Golden’s are perfect, you know that’s bull just as much as I have, Golden’s bite and attack more people a year than pit bulls do, but do you read about it, no? Trust me, i see it first hand. And you’re right, some pits are nasty, and I feel for them, because I can’t help but know, they could have had a better life, My fiance’s brother has a Golden and he is awesome, never bit anyone, hes very excitable and always jumping and licking, not aggresive what so ever, so there are good dogs & there are bad dogs, I’ve had a Pit Bull in the past named Rex, pure bred good ol’ american pit, he was the most loyal dog I’ve ever had, before I had him he was trained to fight and attack without command, with command as well, it was “Shake Em rex” and he’d attack what you’d point to, but when I got him, he was amazing, we’d play a bottle cap game where I’d flcik the bottle cap and he’d grab it, chew it a bit and bring it back, he’d sleep with me nightly like a man, snore, fart, burp, bark at the slightest noise in the middle of the night, he was my protector and I was his savior, sadly I got evicted because of his breed and had to give him up, I wish I hadn’t becuase who got him had him on to short of a leash on a high porch and he jumped to chase something as he was always playful, and he unfortunately hung himself, I miss him terribly. But what I’m trying to say is, atleast you see the truth as I do, to many people are ignorant and close-minded only having their fake macabre fear fed through bia pompus media bullshit lies … and BSL, Psshh … All these people are up in arms about Pit Bulls voting for BSL, but they already came for the Akita’s, Rotties and Dobermans in the past, now they want our pits, and these people are just sitting around with their big mouthes open, well not many of them know that the bsl list is not just for Pit’s, and who’s going to stand up for the assholes when they come for their little precious dogs? I’ve seen poodles attack Pit Bull’s … It Bull. Literally.

I know those aren’t pit bulls, but they get blamed for a lot of it.
so true..and by the way there is a specific breed known as the American Pit Bull Terrier it has just become muttled and confused for other dogs through irresponsible breeding. The term American Pit Bull terrier has been used for to long as a generic term meaning all Bull and Terrier breeds or breeds with big heads or stout musculature

I own one, and he has to be registered as a Staffy x, he was a pound puppy and one of the best dogs I have owned. I also have a Rottweiller x, also a pound puppy, and dont tell anyone, she’s a useless guard dog, as she just wants her tummy rubbed by anyone who comes in the yard. Good to hear some intelligent comments about this breed, any breed can be dangerous. The best guard dog I ever owned was a border collie, he would let you in, but 5 hours later you are still there. Just ask the electricity guy who ignored the sign on the gate.
its simple. Get a dog that suits your lifestyle. Include the dog as a family member. Give the dog exercise, training and plenty of love. Respect other people and their animals when you are out walking. Appreciate the fact that other people may be scared of your dog, and dont give them a hard time about it.(After all, my other half is scared of spiders….) Keep dignity for your dog, yourself and others, and your dog’s reputation will take care of itself. My neighbour was terrified of dogs, but she now loves mine, probably because they dont terrorise anyone!!!
i have 2 nice pit bulls, they are so sweet and every one i got was so nice i havent yet seen a pit bull being mean.just because there is a line of agressiveness in them doesnt mean they will hurt someone.
My dad had a pitbull and when my step mom had her first child, the pitbull would curl up next to him when the baby was taking his naps…Zeus was an amazing dog even though his first owner abused him and made him pull tires. He was 2 ft across on his chest and though people thought he was a mean dog he was very loving and would not attack anyone unless he thought they would try to hurt his family. But one night we had him in the back yard and when we looked out the window we saw a van pull up…we thought nothing of it until they shot him with a tranqualizer, grabbed him, and drove off. We later realized they took him to the dog fights just because he looked mean and he was a pitbull. People who think that just because a dog is a pitbull is mean and will attack almost anyone is stupid and they need to look not at the dog’s face but at what the dog itself does…these are general assumption and accusations. Dont punish the dog but the owner who made him who he is.
I agree I owned a Pit Bull named Julie unfortunately she only lived to six years old. But she was the best dog I have ever had. So sweet and lovable. She was great around the baby too. I really miss her.
