The little duck I found in the weeds didn’t do so well on the water. It wouldn’t forage and swim with the rest of the clutch. It probably didn’t imprint very well on its mother, because an egg was seen in the nest early yesterday after the others had moved to the pond. This morning there was no egg.
That means that this one was a late hatcher.
My dad managed to catch the duck with a snow shovel on the pond, and it’s now in the brooder to recuperate.
It hasn’t eaten yet, but it’s no longer shivering.
We’ll see how it goes.
Your newest pet.
Eating well now.
Maybe you should read up on anti-biotics? A feed store might sell them, maybe in chicken feed or for chick’s water bowls? Or a pet store in the fish section. Not sure if anti-biotics would be helpful or harmful. Does the duckling seem sickly?
As a child, I never was good at saving injured birds, and gave up. But I wish you the best of luck! Cute little ducky.
I haven read on ducklings. I would guess they would eat flies, but i guess they eat regular feed like chicks do, or there would be no domestic ducks because farmers aren’t going to go out with a butterfly net (but you can make a butterfly net cheap- instructions probably online).
I hope he lives!
This post is a couple of weeks old now, and I can’t help but ask did this cute little fella survive and get back onto the water? I’ve got my fingers crossed for him. (or maybe it was a her!)
She is alive and well!
Good to hear about the duck’s progress! Any name for the newest member? – Lisa Williams
