Benji vs. “The Wolf”

October 31, 2010 by SWestfall3

From Benji the Hunted, a film that Siskel and Ebert fought over.

It’s sad what happens to that obvious wolf dummy in the end…

My mom took my brother and me to see this movie when we were kids. Now, my mom is a brilliant, down-to-earth, and sensitive person, but she has a weird issue where she gets so involved in a movie that while she’s watching it she has trouble distinguishing between fiction and real life. So when Benji tricks the wolf into jumping off the cliff, Mom stands up in the middle of the theater and cries “Yay, Benji!”

I used to watch this on VHS many, many times when I was a kid.

It and Milo and Otis were staples.

I didn’t know that Milo and Otis was a Japanese film.

I wondered why the land looked like West Virginia with an ocean, and the wildlife was similar but just a bit “off.”

I LOVE the “Benji” movies, and this one is my favorite! Benji’s trainer/owner was known for his very humane and positive training methods at a time when any cruel efforts to “get the shot” were accepted by some productions(and I hope this reputation of Frank Inne is never tarnished). These guys also seemed to get the best expressions and most natural “acting” out of the animals of about any contemporary trainers at the time–they really went to a lot of effort! There was a lot of complicated, specific actions this wolf(or possibly very high percent hybrid) had to do in this film, as wolves(when Hollywood deigns to actually really use real wolves in a production) do in most any film they are used in. Why do the people(like Mr. Coppinger) who insist wolves “can’t” be trained not remember the wolves used in movies? If they CAN’T be trusted, how the heck do these people think a wolf is going to be allowed loose on a crowded movie set? Much, much more complicated than life with paleo hunter-gatherers(sorry Retriverman, I have been on a Coppinger-rant of late…..)

Somehow I managed to miss this cinematic classic in theaters. I will say, though, that I love the use of the remixed Ennio Morricone music in this video. As for the dummy, well, let me just say that we’re looking at simulated anmimal action with production values on a par with the lion-wrestling of Monty Python’s “Scott of the Antarctic” …
