I love watching these things stalk.
I call these wolves the Farley Mowat wolves, because they actually do live on rodents.
Contrary to what this documentary says, these wolves are actually more distantly related to the wolf and dog species than the golden jackal is.
The initial mtDNA study on Ethiopian wolves suggested that they were recent derivatives of wolves that went into Africa, but this was later found to be incorrect when we could create a proper phylogenetic tree of the dog family after sequencing the dog genome.







Huh. If I had to have guessed, I would have thought them on the fox side of the famly. Goes to show why genome stuff is so important.
They kind of remind me of dingo-colored coyotes.
I wonder why there are no large herbivores there. The rodents seem to be the climax herbivores.
