Brindle colors are within the core bulldog family, but the merle coloration likely comes from curs that are fairly widely distributed in the Deep South. Crossing bulldog-types with curs is not unusual. Even today, a common cross is the “Catahoula bulldog.”
There are not many breeds that have the potential to have brindle and merle occur on the same dog, but this is one of them.
The only other ones I can think of are the Great Dane and the Cardigan Welsh corgi. Lurchers (obviously) also have this potential.

I like his looks except for the muzzle. With that undershot jaw and short-stopped muzzle, it seems as though this breed wud have the same kind of breathing problems as the modern EBD. I much prefer the muzzle conformation of the ABD or the Catahoula B.D. I also like the temperament of the ABD. How does this race compare in that department?
The ABBB was first a cross of the Old White English of the local area (of which I breed) used as a foundation, crossed with Colby APBT (not a bad cross as the Colby is useful in rounding up cattle) and the Catahola (maybe a cur, but not Bully). Later, crosses with the American Bulldog (which had been crossed with EBs) and other Bully breeds of who knows what depending on the breeder.
Here’s a link to explain the on going process of the so-called breed….
