During this time of year, the only green you can find on the forest floor are ferns and moss. The snow isn’t on the ground, which means all you see is gray and drabness with a little green mixed in.

There are several things I’d liked to have photographed on that walk: a pair of ravens soared just above the canopy of the forest and a barred owl glided about ten feet above my head.
iPAD2 just wasn’t in position at the right time.
I would love to have seen the barred owl. Maybe next time?
The easiest way to find barred owls in eastern woodlands is to call them in by voice or with a recording–they’re very territorial. But don’t overdo it, they can do you hurt and the calling really upsets them.
Ferns and mosses are the coolest plants there are!!!!!!!! The fern looks like it’s a Polystichum.
Some kind of shield fern is the best I can come up with.
Given the area & time of year its almost certainly Polystichum acrostichoides, aka Christmas fern.
