The mother is the blue merle Aussie.
I’ve seen this cross before, only the father was a cryptic merle black Aussie and the mother a golden retriever.
The puppies were merled on a red gold background. (Like this redbone/Aussie.)

the black dog on 26 may post looks like them, is it really purebred? can you solve the mystery of this black retriever type dog ??
The dog on that post is purebred, but it is very atypical for its breed.
Is there an actual reason to be crossing these breeds? Is there a purpose for them other than to advertise as Designer Dogs?
Not really. A herding breed/retriever can be something bred for dog sports and for assistance work– possibly SAR– but in general, it’s usually a border collie and golden, rather than an Australian shepherd.
That’s funny, I must’ve looked at a different link, because it didn’t say whether these dogs were purpose bred, oops, or what.
My last purebred litter of Salukis didn’t have a ‘purpose,’ other than to further my cross-breeding program, be nice pets, oh, and one is a being shown in conformation. Shouldn’t have bred them, I guess, since now they’re taking up oxygen that could have been used to nurture dogs that have a *purpose.*
These were more or less an unintentional crossbreeding.
